Elderly couple dies by suicide in Rajasthan, alleging harassment by children

A 70-year-old man and his wife allegedly died by suicide by jumping into a water tank of their home in Rajasthan’s Nagaur, police said on Thursday. In the suicide note found pasted on the walls throughout their home, the man accused his sons, daughters-in-law and other relatives of harassment over property matters.
The bodies of the couple, identified as Hazariram Bishnoi (70), and his 68-year-old wife Chawali Devi, were recovered from a water tank inside their home in Karni Colony on Thursday.
The neighbours, having not seen the couple for two days, grew concerned and alerted their son. The son later notified the local police, who arrived at the scene to find the tank’s lid open and the couple’s bodies floating in the water.
Station House Officer, Kotwali police station, Manish Dev, said the bodies were taken out of the tank and sent for post-mortem examination.
“While the autopsy of Vishnoi’s body has been completed, that of his wife’s body will be done on Friday morning,” news agency PTI quoted Manish Dev as saying.
According to a note purportedly left behind by Vishnoi, he was being harassed by his sons and relatives, the SHO said.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
